What is your educational background?
I attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, graduating in 1979 from the Dental Hygiene Program. I was inducted into the Del Mar College Hall of Fame my senior year. I was invited and added to the Dental Hygiene Honor Society at graduation for exemplary grades and performance.
How long have you practiced dental hygiene?
I have been in dentistry 35 years, which includes my education and various types of practices. I have worked in the area of research for the Indian Health Service as an independent contractor with a grant pertaining to periodontal disease vs. diabetes. Following a three-year study, the research was published. As part of the grant, I also served as a nutritional counselor at the Claremore Hospital in Claremore, Oklahoma. For the past 10 years, I have been an administrator for an all-volunteer dental clinic for the poor. As a clinician, I have worked in private periodontal practices, general family practices and high-end cosmetic practices. And I was a clinical instructor for the Senior Dental students at Oral Roberts University.
What is your current practice?
I am now working with a new start-up general family practice in Dallas to help the dentist get his dental hygiene department up and running profitably. It is exciting to help practices implement hygiene protocols that are beneficial for the patient, as well as provide incomes streams for employees. The more income we can generate for the practice, the more technology the dentist can implement to enhance the patients’ quality of care.
What do you enjoy most about being a dental hygienist?
I am really in my element when teaching people something valuable like proper oral care. By offering my advice, I can make a difference in my patients’ health — whether it is dental hygiene products to help keep their teeth healthy, or nutritional advice to help keep their body healthy. I believe we all have a special talent that we can share with people. When you are fulfilling that purpose you are the most happy.
When were you introduced to Oxyfresh?
I have been using the products since 1998. However, I was not introduced to the business until two years ago. Since I have found out about how leading edge and awesome the company is, I am committed to going full-out in sharing the products with everyone I know while building my business. What are your hobbies and passions in life?
I get a lot of joy traveling, visiting new places and cultures, having fun with my children and grandchildren, helping others reach their goals in life and providing funding for people who need help.
Who is the most influential person in your life that played a major role in your success?
My parents are the key to my success. They had wisdom, discipline and positive affirmation. My father always said, “If you need a helping hand, there is one at the end of your arm.” They were strong disciplinarians and held the boundaries close, but allowed me to make my own decisions and take the fall I when needed. My father was very successful in his business and it was all predicated on handshake deals. He said, “You become who you are, based on your integrity and your word.” Integrity and honesty were the cornerstones of my upbringing. I thank my parents for their fortitude and consistency in their parenting, which has led to my success.
